I've never seen a .co domain before. What is it supposed to be for?

  • http://www.dotsauce.com Mark Fulton

It opens to the public tomorrow. Technically it's the country code for Columbia, but is being branded superbly as commerce, company and a new web era.

For more info and why I like .co, check out this article.

I do wonder though, is the .co taking the same ranking hit that google dishes out to most of the other non top level domain names?
I mean, having a keyword rich name is one thing, but if google refuses to rank you, its hardly worth it. I'd take a less optimized .com or .org and even a .net over a .info, because google seems to spread some hate sauce on your site for no apparent reason and I wonder if .co is in the same boat as .info and others…

Thanks for the great list . i have regged one landrush domain .i hope i can success to reg.

There is no ranking penalty for certain domains (except maybe .info because it's cheap and used by malware/spammers) – Google does, however, have a preference for certain country codes depending on which country you are in.

Additionally, these keywords are likely not available in any other extension.

    I got the BusinessWebDesign.co plus http://www.kissa.co and http://www.karissa.co and http://www.kki.co!
It was scary at first. I saw the first 2 in my GoDaddy account at around 11am CST then at 1pm they were gone. I thought that I lost them. So I ordered the second two and they didn't show I so I knew something was up. Called CD and they said with the launch today it could be 24-48 hours before we'd know for sure.

So I went to check http://www.whois.co and I was on the first one and GD was on the rest of them BUT they were registered at about the time that I did them soooo I figured that I DID get them.
Just a few minutes ago I got the last registration email for them and I have them temp directed to where they need to go.
Wow what a crazy first domain extension launch for me. I wonder what else I could get… if only they weren't the 27 bucks…

What, so we can just buy any domain on that list? Surely they would have been snapped up by now? I mean, I try to buy certain extremely obscure domains these days and they are all taken. The only ones you can get are those which are extremely long winded and/or are .mobi / .biz or something that nobody wants.
