Because somebody took the time to register each one and pay a yearly fee, they must have had some reason to do so, right?

I’m sure many of you can relate to this. When doing expired domain research, all too often I find myself in disbelief and laughing at some of the phrases some person took the time to claim and possibly make a website for.

Here are some older expired domains I found to be so odd that I wrote them down for laughs later on.

MmmmBeer.com – Sponsored by Homer Simpson

LaserFreezer.com

ProfessorPeanut.com

ChildSwap.com – The latest in reality day care TV

OldHo.com

RobotZilla.com

ChopstickHero.com

DietCock.com

SpellingNazi.com

Weeklings.com – You 9-to-5′ers are so weak!

AnimatedTattoo.com – I hope this never gets invented

Amazingly, some of these domains have been registered again.

Since I am going through the May 21st drop list anyway, I’ve pulled some more humorous domains to show these maniacs are registering every day.

NordicChair.com – 2012 successor to the Nordic Track, sit and get fit!

AmericanReam.com – I’m really hoping this was a typo

KnittedVest.com – Sorry Grandma, even GoDaddy can’t get this business off the ground

FreelanceGamers.com – Where do I sign up?

Rugaholics.com – An addiction only limited by floor space

DonutPorn.com – Microwave 8 secs for best results

FriendStable.com – Don’t forget to feed Jimmy

CrapSoftware.com – May be in-demand in Japan, but my toilet doesn’t have a computer yet

Don’t drink and register. You may break one of these important rules of domain sales; making sure a domain has value to begin with. Hopefully that means there are still good deals to be done.

The real winners here are those who picked up green domains before the word went viral. href="http://fragerfactor.blogspot.com/">Frager Factor tipped me off to a great New York Times article entitled “Find an Undervalued Asset. Fix It Up. Flip It. (Now It’s Websites, Not Houses).”

I love reading these online success stories, they really get the entrepreneurial gears turning and motivate me to continue developing out my domain portfolio.

“Dave Hermansen did not own a bird or a cage when he bought bird-cage.com, an online store, for $1,800 three years ago. He simply saw a Web site that was ‘very, very poorly done,’ and begged the owners to sell it to him. He then redesigned the site, added advertising and drove up traffic. Last December, he sold it for $173,000.”

In this day and age, you don’t even have to invest any money beyond a domain name to “flip” a website. By developing quickly and driving traffic you continually increase the value of a website, especially if that new website is earning revenue. However, even if you have not earned a dime you can often times sell your newly matured online property for several hundred dollars in just a couple months time.

“Some Web sites begin as labors of love. Take Celebrity Baby Blog, which Danielle Friedland, the creator, has said she created after reeling off facts during the 2004 Golden Globes ‘about who was pregnant with twins or had recently given birth.’ Four years later, People.com bought the Web site after it noticed an unfulfilled niche: ‘a very passionate community of young moms,’ said Fran Hauser, president of People Digital.

Ms. Hauser said she would not comment on the sale price. Industry insiders speculate it was in the low millions.”

You can Wikipedia dominating it’s search results and is releasing this open-author information sharing website to compete for some top results. Knol is currently in private beta testing, you can read more information on it

What?! Knol.com Owned by Steam Cleaning Company

Tens of thousands of visitors, including myself, typed “Knol.com” into their browsers after hearing the news, only to be baffled by a Dutch website featuring high quality vacuums and steam cleaners. The company who owns the domain has posted a thank you message to Google, for the traffic and publicity I assume. They later posted this surprising message which is, oddly enough, badly translated by Google:

“Well, from that Friday there is a real run immediately on domains that the word “Knol” in itself, as also the domain knol.com….. This has resulted in tens of thousands of visitors who came to take a look at our Knol.com! ….. In a short time, we had received visitors from more than 130 countries around the world.

Fortunately, the website in a position to be able bastions and the site remained in the air.

But that was not in, we were by Jan and alleman asked if we do not want to sell the domain….. Unfortunately, we have to disappoint everyone, how beautiful their offer sometimes.

…. In short, it was a special experience.”

There you have it, they will not be selling the domain name to Google, nor any other individual. Someone should call and suggest a way to monetize their new temporary flood of international traffic.

The Squatters Came Out in Full Force

A quick search on Sedo shows 358 pages of domains containing the term “Knol.” Many have bids and are receiving a minor amount of traffic. Apparently these people do not realize that “Knol” is only a codename! Google is going to brand it’s new knowledge portal with a completely different name and acquire it’s respective domain name.

Think before you <a

She has been accused of stealing over $1 million from Microsoft and Expedia, according to court papers and a statement released yesterday by the U.S. Attorney in Seattle.

The 18-count indictment (PDF, 10 pages) alleges that Gudmundson used a variety of tactics to inflate her expense reimbursements. For example, prosecutors allege that she used her corporate American Express card to pay for domain registrations and then submitted doctored receipts to receive more than she paid.

Gudmundson is a 44 year old woman from Kirkland, Seattle. She was arrested Thursday night and made her initial appearance in court yesterday, as reported by Todd Bishop who attended the court appearance. She has been indicted on 11 counts of wire fraud and seven counts of mail fraud. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says those offenses, on conviction, are punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Microsoft released this statement: “We can confirm that Microsoft worked closely with authorities on this investigation. We take employee theft seriously and have internal measures in place to help identify fraudulent activities.”

For more information on the case against Gudmundson read the <a

Domains which are parked with less-than-appealing graphic images and sponsored links so irrelevant that a child wouldn’t accidentally click.

“Welcome to SnowMobileRentals.com!”

I can’t say that all my own parked domains are perfectly customized. Maybe it’s time that we all did a little investigation and optimization into our parked domain names. Get some feedback on keywords and design from friends, family and colleagues, though be sure to tell them not to click links!

Optimizing Your Landing Pages

Improving your landing pages on even a few domains could start you earning an easy residual income. It may be a time consuming process, but in the long run it will definitely be worth your while. Here are some things you should really put some thought into perfecting on your landing pages.

Unique and relevant title and sub-title.

Creating the right photos, graphics or logo.

Matching and appealing color scheme.

Relevant and powerful sponsored link keywords.

Get started with your highest trafficked domain names and work your way down. Even if your name gets a single visitor per day and you can gain that persons trust and attention enough to click on a sponsored link for, oh let’s say a measly 10¢, that would earn you $36 a year from one domain!

Update: COWBOYS Lose Domain Name in OT

A week after the Dallas Cowboys football organization bid on, won, then backed out of purchasing the domain name cowboys.com, the domain was sold on silent auction for $370,000. A group of investors stepped in to pick up the option on the free agent domain name. Most domain experts agree that the Cowboys were foolish to let this gem go. The resale price of the newly purchased name is expected to go into six figures. The Cowboys won the domain name through a Moniker auction on Oct. 12th with a phone in bid of “275,” a number which lawyers later said represented $275 dollars, not the actual $275,000 sales price. I guess the organization should stick to pigskin, when it comes to the buck, they are rookies for sure.

When it came time to pay up for their recent purchase of cowboys.com, attorneys for the legendary football empire, the Dallas Cowboys, balked. $275,000? Oops, they thought is was $275.00! That was the lousy excuse offered by America’s team. It seems the Cowboys franchise won the domain in a live auction sponsored by Moniker on Friday, Oct. 12th at the Traffic Domain Name Conference in Hollywood, Florida.

Playing Games

According to Monte Cahn, the head of Moniker, a phone in bid was reported to have come in from a representative of the organization. About a week later when the bill came in, the attorney claimed there was a misunderstanding about the words “Two hundred and seventy-five,” claiming the team would never have bid on such a pricey moniker. This claim seems ridiculous in light of the fact that the minimum bid for the name was listed at $250,000, and the expected sales price was estimated to go as high as $500,000.

There may be more to the story than meets the eye, however. Apparently, the cowboys.com domain may come with some strings attached. The previous owner of the domain claimed to have received the first trademark ever given a domain name on May 15, 1995. Certificate #27303 issued by the Office of the Secretary of State for the state of Oklahoma may present legal issues for the football organization. Under current law, trademark owners are allowed to lay some claim to domains that include their trademark.

Maybe the football dynasty should just do what any respectable Texan would do… Cowboy up and pay the bill. Then let the battle over trademark be settled in a good old fashioned shoot out.

[tags]cowboys, dallas cowboys, domain sales, cowboys.com[/tags]
<a

The case was investigated by the F.B.I. He has agreed to plead guilty to a wire fraud charge which can carry a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, however prosecutors will only ask for a range of probation to six months in custody. Scali will face various fines and during this probation period his computer use will be monitored.
Chris Ambler discussed a story he heard recently on a local Seattle morning radio show. The discussion was about Specialty Roast Coffee Company who donates $2 of every bag of coffee beans to a charity of the buyer’s choice. Coffee connoisseurs can visit SpecialtyRoast.com and select from a growing list of local and national charity foundations to donate to.

“We give away, on average, 20% of our gross. It’s counter-intuitive but we’re profitable, adds Warren Sly, founder. “Giving as generously as we do has been good for business. As Benjamin Franklin proved, you can live well by doing good.”

As the story goes the savvy businessman who owns the company has been purchasing additional domain names including the names of the charities followed by the word “coffee.” For example RedCrossCoffee.com, PetCoffee.com (Humane Society). The owner claims that this is one of his best ideas as it brings residual traffic to his business from type-ins. Customers tell their friends that they order their coffee beans at RedCrossCoffee.com and the power of word-of-mouth marketing sets in.

I can imagine that the idea of giving charitable donations can be applied to many products and services on the web. Domain names continue to be a powerful marketing tool. In a related article on DotSauce, Creative Marketing with Domain Names, we see that hundreds of large corporations are turning to domains that do not mention their company name at all to aid in promotion.

The Specialty Roast concept makes being a humanitarian quite easy and I hear the perks are good too.
<a

Jay also points out that even some of the bidding looks suspicious and fraudulent, vcharacter.com has a bidder at $100,000 right now, quite odd for the estimated value of such a name.

<a

After bidding up an auction for the domain BoobTube.com, which eventually reached a high bid of $41,688, SEDO contacted Coker with some bad news. The listed seller of the domain didn’t own BoobTube.com at all and to his surprise and dismay the auction was promptly canceled after 2 weeks of bidding.

You can read <a

He agrees that Sedo may have acted appropriately in canceling the auction and not allowing for any funds to change hands, however he states that their are inherent flaws with their system that need to be addressed.
In a move that may be deemed as the all-time most ridiculous response to server performance by a hosting company, DreamHost has manually blocked Googlebot from many of it’s high traffic accounts via .htaccess files. This has been confirmed in an email sent to the owner of Zoso.ro, a popular Romanian blog. As well as in a DigitalPoint forum topic entitled “Is DreamHost stupid of am I missing something?” by user Johan-cr who explains that he too received the same email.

Here is a transcript of the email sent to DreamHost accounts:

This email is to inform you that a few of your sites were getting hammered by Google bot. This was causing a heavy load on the webserver, and in turn affecting other customers on your shared server. In order to maintain stability on the webserver, I was forced to block Google bot via the .htaccess file.

[Limit GET HEAD POST
order allow,deny
deny from 66.249
allow from all]

You also want to consider making your files be unsearchable by robots and crawlers, as that usually contributes to high number of hits. If they hit a dynamic file, like php, it can cause high memory usage and consequently high load…

As of yesterday, it has been reported that DreamHost corrected the issue and removed the block from several .htaccess files, stating that it was no longer necessary. The company most likely had the best of intentions to improve server stability for websites that had excessive CPU usage. Many, including myself, find it quite ironic and funny mainly because of the buzz focused around SEO by today’s webmasters.
<a

Most of my encounters with these domain name stickers end up with a pointing finger and a hardy laugh. Lets look over some formating tips and resources for optimizing your car sticker to return the best results.

The Purpose – Why bother with a sticker for my car when only a handful of people may see it each day? When it comes to domain names, all exposure is good exposure and every little bit helps. A handful of customers, subscribers or contributors to your website or service will easily reward your time and effort. You can’t deny that if you have a great website that you are proud of, it would be damn cool to advertise your domain on your vehicle. Let’s do it!

The Copy – Don’t include “www.” search engine’s don’t crawl your windshield. The first thing we want an on-looker to read is your domain name. Sometimes this is all you need, if your domain name has strong keywords which brings across your message you may not need a slogan or description line. However, if you are like myself with a sexy name such as “DotSauce.com” your on-lookers will be intrigued but confused, so I personally would simply add the text, “Domain Name Magazine” below the domain.

The Styling – Choose an easily readable sans-serif font such as Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, or Helvetica. Your domain name should be as large as you are willing to go, the bigger the better for visibility. Do keep in mind your local laws on car stickers. Do not go overboard on bold lettering, at large font sizes bold styling can degrade the legibility of your letters. Your slogan line, if any, should be short and informative centered beneath your name.

The Colors – I highly recommend using all white as it is the most readable color when we take into account visibility during night and day. If you are able to get fancy with your sticker, a thin black trim or border outline can give the effect of bringing your text off the windshield for increased clearness.

You can purchase car stickers online from various marketing retailers and specialty storefronts. Though I am sure in most areas you can get it done locally at the nearest Sign Shop. Local sign shops can give you more flexibility with design and text positioning.

The best custom sticker service I have found online is DecalKits.com, they have a powerful and easy to use application for creating your own car decals. They also have the option available to outline your text in black. All of DecalKits stickers are made with premium outdoor vinyl.

I personally am going to have one made for my domains, I just have to figure out which ones I want to promote the most! Let me know how your domain name sticker works out, I want to see some pictures!

Heroes television series returns tonight from it’s several month hiatus. If you can’t quite remember what happened you might want to recall what the characters are up to or watch past episodes.

For those of you blasphemers who don’t watch Heroes, there is a cover organization in the show called the Primatech Paper Company, it is a front for a secret laboratory which studies the genetics of those with special powers or “heroes.”

NBC has cleverly developed the fake website PrimatechPaper.com, which is modeled after the company on the Heroes TV series. Fans of the show have since unraveled the secret ‘easter egg’ to this domain as well as a secret blog which appears to be written by the character “Wireless” whom appears in one of the last episodes.

See for yourself… click on the “About Us” tab of Primatech site and then click on the PrimatechPaper logo image. You will then be prompted to enter a username (bennet) and password (claire). You will then have access to numerous ‘private company files’ which contain information and images on various Heroes characters and their special powers. The passwords can be found at samantha48616e61.com (Wireless’ Blog).

This neat hidden website was leaked slowly across Heroes fan forums, blogs and email, the usernames and passwords for each file were disclosed in various intervals on Wireless’ Blog to keep people on their toes and coming back for more. The Primatech Paper company website most likely has sparked interest in thousands of new viewers of the Heroes series. Those new fans then realize the commitment that NBC has to creating a rich storyline and appeasing their appetite for Heroes secret content.

When it comes to the internet, we should know by now that a secret is never kept a secret for long.

Could you incorporate a secret website into your business or personal website? What could a viral domain do for you?

DotSauce Magazine

The skit, as scripted for the Dec. 4 installment of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” was about absurdist college sports mascots that the host and his writers would like to see someday.

Among them were “the Boise State Conjoined Vikings,” who had been born locked at the horns, as well as something Mr. O’Brien called “the Webcam manatee” — said to be the mascot of “F.S.U.” — which was basically someone in a manatee costume rubbing himself or herself provocatively in front of a camera (to the tune of the 1991 hit “I Touch Myself”). Meanwhile a voyeur with a lascivious expression watched via computer.

Who knew that life would soon imitate art.

At the end of the skit, in a line Mr. O’Brien insists was ad-libbed, he mentioned that the voyeur (actually Mark Pender, a member of the show’s band) was watching www.hornymanatee.com. There was only one problem: as of the taping of that show, which concluded at 6:30 p.m., no such site existed. Which presented an immediate quandary for NBC: If a viewer were somehow to acquire the license to use that Internet domain name, then put something inappropriate on the site, the network could potentially be held liable for appearing to promote it.

“We didn’t want to take it out,” Mr. Ross said yesterday, “so we bought it.”

In explaining to the audience the next night what he and his writers had done, Mr. O’Brien marveled, “For $159, NBC, the network that brought you ‘Meet the Press,’ Milton Berle and the nation’s first commercial television station became the proud owner of www.hornymanatee.com.”
<a
