href="http://www.dotsauce.com/domains/">$19 quality .com inventory, Domain Club members enjoy private access to regularly updated, handpicked lists of recently expired .com domains. These domain lists are made available to Pro and Business level members on our member forums.

Beginning next week, I will begin to publish small samples of these handpicked expired domains to the public here on DotSauce.

The samples will be taken from earlier month’s lists so that members have plenty of time to consider claiming any available domains before they are published.

I have to remind everyone who has the best lists, right? There have been 6 full lists and 2 bonus lists published on the inside since the Domain Club launched.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about the DotSauce Domain Club I would be happy to help. stumbled upon a security exploit after registering a domain that had recently expired.

Reyes found that those who have Google Apps setup on their domains are particularly vulnerable to a social engineering exploit. However, any personal or business domain that is allowed to expire may be vulnerable to identity theft. This warning is not necessarily restricted to those using Google Apps.

Being the owner of a domain obviously enables a person to create and use any email addresses, even those that may have been used in the past. With website histories and domain Whois registrant email addresses being archived, there is due cause for concern.

Additionally, expired domains may become a target for identity theft as news leaks out.

[Header photo <a

Reyes has provided us with a first-hand demonstration.

"This Domain Has Already Been Registered With Google Apps"

After verifying ownership of his new domain, Reyes was able to gain access to an existing Google Apps for domains account including stored emails, contacts and calendars. This leads to being able to access more sensitive information such as passwords to social networking accounts, shopping and online banking.

Personal Information Compromised

The Google Security team responded to news of the exploit with a statement that it is important to renew a domain or export your personal information. Google may be updating the domain verification process as a result of the incident.

Two Solutions to Avoiding Identity Theft by Domain

The risk associated with expired domains is so obvious that it is often overlooked. A little common sense goes a long way in protecting yourself.

1. Export and Erase All Personal Information

Before allowing any domain name to expire, erase any email accounts and personal information.

Inform all of your contacts that you will be using a new domain and provide them plenty of notice and follow up reminders to update your contact information and email address.

None of your accounts on other websites should be using email addresses associated with the domain.

2. Renew Your Domain Name Indefinitely

Domains can be registered for a maximum of 10 years. Doing so will put your mind at ease and is also said to give some website authority for SEO purposes.

All domain registrars have the option to register for multiple years or to automatically renew a domain. Be sure to have valid payment information on file. You’ll also want to be sure you are receiving email notices from the registrar. You don’t won’t those renewal reminders getting lost in a spam folder.

It’s also a good practice to use an administrator and registrant email address that is not associated with the domain name. Otherwise, you may be vulnerable to domain theft if your website or email address are hacked.

Take special care of your personal and business domains to keep your identity secure! If you are selling or re-branding, take the proper steps before transferring ownership and seek out a reputable buyer.

Please pass the word along about the security risk associated with letting domains expire.
DotSauce Magazine

I know a lot of you are looking for short brand names for your startup or personal web presence. These types of domains are some of the most sought after. Most entrepreneurs would be thrilled to have a pronounceable, memorable and relevant brand identity for their websites, apps and products.

It seems right to follow in the footsteps of so many powerful and compelling short brands owned by businesses who were lucky enough to be around while the best names were still available.

You may have a limited budget and are looking for five letter domains that are available to register. There are a few tools available to help. However, you will find that the supply of available five letter names is quickly diminishing in both quantity and quality.

There is still hope for finding good quality short domains. With a little time spent researching at the right sources, you will be able to find five letter domains that are affordable.

SnapNames Advanced Search

SnapNames is one of the most active auction and expiring domain marketplaces. Follow these steps to modify the search parameters. This will help you narrow the results and quickly find short .com domains.

Uncheck unwanted TLDs

Check the boxes to remove hyphens, numbers and IDNs

Input max characters as 5

Set results per page to 500

After scrolling past a limited selection of four letter domains, you will begin to see the big list of five letter domains with the potential to be acquired.

You may also want to uncheck “Buy It Now” results to avoid five letter domains with ridiculous asking pricing. Other popular domain marketplaces can offer additional results with their advanced search tools.

FreshDrop Filters

You can get super fast look at 5 letter domains that are listed on Afternic, Fabulous, BuyDomains, as well as domains expiring from GoDaddy and Dynadot using FreshDrop.net quick filters. Professional members can use these filters across other marketplaces.

The “Reg Fee” selection is a list of domains that have been deleted in the previous 10 days.

LLLLL - Covers all five letter domains

VCVCV & CVCVC - Help in finding potentially pronounceable domains by vowel and consonant positions

ZFBot Research Tool

The results found at ZFBot will be a little different. First, you will need to enter at least 2 characters to begin a search for short domains. A new feature allows you to place terms at the beginning or the end of a domain. This can be a great way to target a particular niche with a related two or three-letter word as part of your five letter brand.

Select your extensions, set the min and max characters to 5 and you’re on your way.

The domains found with ZFBot may or may not be available for sale. A good sign of domains that have the potential to be acquired is if they are parked. You can also search dropping domains.

When you find a domain that peeks your interest, view the WhoIs information and email the owner directly with your offer to purchase the domain.

Sedo Down for the Count

While researching for this article I was surprised to encounter difficulty finding short domains at Sedo, the world’s largest domain marketplace. The new search user interface is now using sliders and the option to define a maximum character limit is no longer present. Additionally, the Sedo inventory is not working correctly on FreshDrop.

Update: I may have encountered a bug when trying Sedo. The ‘Domain Length’ option slider now works to search for domains with a maximum of 5 characters.

Short Domains Discounted to Just $19

Before you head off on your search, I’d like to clue you in on a handful of short domains that are now available at the new DotSauce Domain Club.

Frawn.com

Hapse.com

Cozers.com

Huged.com

Premium members can buy these and other quality .com domains for just $19 each. There are many other benefits to Domain Club membership, so be sure to check it out.

Best of luck finding the perfect five letter domain. Please leave a comment to let us know how the search goes and if you know someone in need of a great brand name consider sharing this article with them.
top performing domain sales categories of 2011. Business, Computers and Shopping took the top honors for most domain sales. Credit went to the tremendous growth of eCommerce and Electronics in recent years.

[Image: John Carleton, For The Win, via Flickr Creative Commons]

You should be a happy camper if you have a lot of technology or business related domain names. These are niches that I target when doing expired domain research, though I wouldn’t pass up gems from other niches that have good end-user potential.

Poll Question

In this poll question I’m asking you to share what your portfolio is comprised of. It should prove interesting to have a perspective look at how the industry is investing in domains.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Thank you for your participation!

Be sure to subscribe to DotSauce so I can let you know when the results are in.

Benefits of Niche Targeting

There are several benefits of targeting a niche over choosing a variety of categories. It’s nice to know ahead of time what you’re getting in to. Targeting niches helps you specialize and grow more knowledgeable about related sales, popular keywords and trends.

Niche targeting saves you from having to dig through the proverbial haystack and can make for more productive research sessions.

While on the hunt for domain names to add to your portfolio, consider your online marketing reach. Ask yourself, “What type of audience can I reach with my present network and web presence?“ It can boost business to target a particular niche that you know your network is already interested in.

To get started, create a list of keywords to target on drop lists and aftermarket listings. Update your keywords regularly. Get additional keyword suggestions with SEO tools and the AdWords Keyword tool.

Niche Challenges

If you are too specific, and I’ve seen this often, some investors will end up with all their eggs in one basket. Categories like 3D or Green domains run the risk of any one industry going southward or being replaced.

It’s nice to be able to offer something for everybody. Consumers like to have choices. If you are targeting a niche, you may want to consider branching out to related industries. It could be as easy as asking your current customers what other topics and industries they have interest in.

Do you have any further suggestions for niche targeting? Please leave a comment; I would love to hear your ideas and how it is working well for you, of course without revealing too much about your prized niche!
heard news that another key search location, the Google Products search portal, now has custom Instant search results.

Google Products can now offer unprecedented insight into what products people want to buy.

Web developers and entrepreneurs should consider consulting Google Instant data for keywords related to their products and services. Alongside the AdWords Keyword tool, Google Instant results rankings and keywords can be useful for both SEO and domain name research.

I am currently focusing on shorter domains (typically two-word), but I know many domain investors are interested in product domains and long-tail keywords for capturing eCommerce traffic. So, I am going to offer the results of my first keyword research experiment with Google Products and share with you how you can find available domains with your own keywords using this method.

Available Domains Found Using Google Products

I was able to find these exact match keyword domains in a relatively short time before writing this article. Several surprising results. You’re welcome to register these domains, but please don’t post this list elsewhere.

3DVideoCameraForSale.com

3DVideoGoggles.com

BestTabletNotebook.com

BookReaderLight.com

DigitalProjectionTV.com

DigitalProjectorBulb.com

DigitalProjectorsPrice.com

RefurbishedDigitalProjector.com

TabletNotebookTouchScreen.com

TabletPCWithGPS.com

ValentinesDayCostume.com

ValentinesDayInvitations.com

ValentinesDayShoes.com

WebsiteMalwareMonitoring.com

WirelessHeadphonesWithMic.com

GoDaddy has extended the $7.49 .com special another week if you want to pick one of these up.

How To Extract Keywords from Google Product Searches

You will notice that Google Instant results can not be selected, highlighted or copied because of their AJAX style implementation and constant updates. So, I had to use a little ingenuity to quickly get a keyword list.

I quickly discovered manually typing out the instant results from Google Products was going to be a pain. I thought to take a few image snapshots of keyword search results of interest to save for later. I used MS Office OneNote for screen capturing, but you can use any number of browser extensions to capture an image of a web page.

I then copy and pasted all the results on to one page (you can do this in Paint, Word, OneNote, PhotoShop) and basically combined them to be one image. (Shown below)

This shows 9 searches which yielded the 15 product domains listed above. Of course, I did have to filter out some obvious Trademarked results.

I took the full screenshot of keyword results to a web application called Free OCR that extracts text from images. Surprisingly, the text came out perfectly formated with one result on each line, ready to be pasted into your choice of bulk domain lookup tool. For most bulk domain availability checks you don’t even have to remove the spaces between keywords or add “.com” to the end, it’s automatic.

I hope you are able to find some interesting domains to compliment your business or add to your portfolio. Stay tuned to DotSauce this week for another exciting opportunity involving domain investment and available domains.

Please leave a comment if you found this keyword research method useful or if you would like to share your results.
Keyword Tool coming out of beta, Google has finally revealed information which explains the significant decrease in search volume data.

Domainers like to review Global and Local monthly search volume data for expired domain research, aftermarket valuations and more. It’s an excellent resource for getting a first impression of keyword popularity.

Many have been in a state of confusion as to why global monthly and local monthly search volume data rapidly dropped by tens of thousands or more in some cases.

The Google AdWords team explained:

Statistics in these columns are now based on Google.com search traffic only. Previously, they also included traffic from search partners.

Now, it’s not clear whether their search partners were powered by other engines or if they are referring to Google Custom Search implementations which display results on external websites.

It seems a shame to me to lose that extra search data. If it was indeed data from Google Custom Search setup on niche websites that was removed, they could now be significantly undervaluing keyword search volume.

This change is reported to come at the request of advertisers. Big AdWords bidders were likely not seeing the return expected from such high volume numbers. The new data should now accurately represent a potential for traffic from Google.com.
DotSauce Magazine

The best programmers on the planet can no longer help you find a good quality domain name for your website.

I’m always interested to hear about a new available domain finder tool, but my interest is usually followed by disappointment. With each query I am let down by the poor quality domains generated by these services.

Take for example a new tool called Brute Force Naming that was just featured on AOL’s popular DownloadSquad blog.

The tool looked promising, providing an advanced method of creating prefixes with vowels in the middle followed by suffixes. That should work, right? Unfortunately it doesn’t.

The results are similar to other tools for researching 5 letter or short domains. They look something like this: Coufo, Blole, Twafo, Twume, Plole, Clule. Terrible.

The domain names generated by many tools today are nonsensical strings of characters. Good quality made up words and “brandable” domains do exist, but they have all been claimed. Just as four letter domains have all been registered, so have gone quality short domains.

Truly quality brandable domains can really only be found on the aftermarket.

So, what are the alternatives?

Keyword Domains

I am a big fan of keyword domain names. Yes, even for branding. I consider good quality keywords to have huge advantages over made up brands that may just sound cool. The advantages are that these types of domains are often very memorable and easily readable.

You’re not too late. There are a lot of keyword domains available to register and many are still affordable on the aftermarket. While you may not be able to get a one-word domain, there are still descriptive two and three-word domain names that have inherent value beyond your modest registration fee.

To find the best names I recommend using data to support the popularity of your keywords. SEO and SEM tools like Google AdWords can provide further insight.

Expired Domains

Every day hundreds of thousands of domain names are allowed to expire by their owners. A few months later these domains make their way back to general availability.

You have two options when going after an expired domain.

Backorder - Find out which registrar the domain name was claimed at. If a domain was previously managed at GoDaddy then you should place a backorder for the name at GoDaddy for the best chances of winning the expiring domain.

Catch the Drop - Approximately 2 months after a domain expires it will “drop” from the registry and become available again. This option usually works for less popular domains. DomainerIncome’s blog has a detailed look at the expiration process.

You may be able to find a quality brandable names by researching expiring domains, but I wouldn’t hold your breath! This is a good place to look for keywords though.

For further reading, I’ve previously written some pro tips for researching expired domains.

Shop the Aftermarket

There are a lot of great marketplaces that are not getting nearly enough of the attention they desserve. The largest domain aftermarket site is Sedo, because of the sheer quantity of listings from around the world. There are less known marketplaces, privately hosted portfolios, and auction services like Flippa where gems can be found.

Earlier this year I shared a list of the top 20 places to buy domains in 2010. The list features the top marketplaces, forums, conferences, auction houses and other options.

Private Inquiries

So, that perfect name has been taken! It happens to thousands of people every day. Why give up on it? You can contact the owner of a domain by looking up their WHOIS information, but you’ll need to pray it isn’t private.

The bookmarklet below will let you quickly view WHOIS data when browsing any domain in you browser. (More useful bookmarklets here)

Bookmarklet: DomainTools (Drag & Drop link to your toolbar)

Email the owner a brief, polite message expressing your interest in the domain and make an offer to purchase. Your offer should be close to the final amount you would be willing to pay if you expect to receive a response.

How do you find quality domain names?

Are there available domain finder tools that actually work?

Thanks for taking the time to read my suggestions for finding quality domains. href="http://www.dotsauce.com/2009/09/24/selling-domain-names/">selling domain names a few times. It’s always a popular subject as one might guess! Have you embraced new tools, avenues and resources for selling domains in 2010?

Creating an Email Newsletter

Some of the biggest brokers in the world rely on their email newsletters to bring in the sales. Have you considered creating one? There are lots of options in this space, some paid, some free. There’s also the question of just how to get people to subscribe and buy.

Valuating / Appraising Domains

This is a definite skill that can’t be learned over night, but with each sale and purchase you make or hear about experience is gained. Learning from industry experts and keeping a close eye on the aftermarket is a good place to start.

Automated appraisals are a popular topic right now, but are they really useful for valuating a domain for sale?

Researching Domains to Purchase

There are many great tools and techniques for researching expiring domains and domains on other marketplaces and drop houses. Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming.

Negotiating Domain Sales

This can be a difficult task as each domain sale is unique. Many have shared sales letters, email correspondence, tips and tricks on asking prices, making offers and bartering. What really works?

Please select an option below and click “Vote!” Thank you!

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Subscribe to DotSauce to be updated on future articles and resources related to the topics you’ve just read about. Here are some quick pro tips on researching expiring domains to buy.

1. Look at the actual words, not the domain name itself.

It’s much easier for your brain to process spaced words rather than viewing those words crammed together as a domain. This allows you to browse through lists at a much faster pace and clearly identify keywords and phrases.

Term extraction is definitely my favorite feature of PremiumDrops domain research subscription.

2. Avoid domains with letter repetition.

This is fairly common knowledge that having repeating letters in a name is bad for branding and usability.

If you do find some high quality keywords then be sure to buy the typo. (Example: PurpleEarth.com should also register PurplEarth.com) to capture any lost visitors.

3. Watch out for word swaps.

You may come across some domains have strong keywords, but unfortunately the word order is flawed. (Example: VideosFootball.com is not nearly as valuable or useable as FootballVideos.com)

I scan through these types of names all the time, try not to let them fool you and move on to the next name.

4. So the words add up, but what about the numbers?

Finding those good keywords is the first step. Get some confidence in your picks by seeing what the stats look like.

Check what year the domain was originally created. Older domains can sometimes be gems.

Do a Google search with the keywords enclosed in quotations (Example: PurpleWidgets.com exact match search would be “Purple Widgets”) You can use Estibot domain tools to get this data in bulk.

Check the global or regional Monthly Search Volume by typing your keywords into the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.

5. Avoid hyphenated domains… Please?

I don’t care what any search marketing guru told you, hyphenated domains have many drawbacks that may not be readily apparent. Aside from the fact that it looks un-professional, when mentioning a hyphenated domain in public it sounds awkward.

Hyphenated domains also risk losing a large portion of website traffic to the non-hyphenated namesake.

6. Set a steady scanning pace for yourself.

Get into a comfortable rhythm of browsing the domains your research has turned up. You should be reading the domains and saying them to yourself at a quick pace.

The idea is not to linger on any one domain too long so that you can browse more domains on the whole.

7. Take a break!

Staring at endless rows of text and numbers can get to be maddening after so many hours! Stretch those legs occasionally, you might even venture outside and soak up some good old vitamin D, I definitely need to!

If you find your eyes are strained and need to rest, glance away from your monitor and stare at the blank corner of a room for a minute or two. This allows your eyes to rest since they are not focusing on anything.

Have fun and may your research unviel all the best domains!

Find these tips helpful? href="http://FreshDrop.net">FreshDrop.net originally launched in 2007 as a unique tool for browsing GoDaddy’s popular TDNAM domain marketplace. Over the years, founder Tan Tran and his team have worked on many enhancements and new features that have transformed FreshDrop.net into an all-around powerful domain research tool designed by domainers for domainers.

FreshDrop.net is not your average domain search and scan tool. The power lies in the amazing filters, functions and statistics that allow domain investors to easily target valuable domains. By filtering out all the “junk” names and getting right down to the types of names one is looking for at the best deals.

Where Do These Domains Come From?

The first thing you will see on FreshDrop is a list of domain marketplaces and individual areas of interest in certain marketplaces. TDNAM, Sedo, Afternic, BuyDomains, Fabulous, Dynadot, and yea even eBay. The marketplace data highlighted in yellow is reserved for FreshDrop Pro subscribers.

Here is a quick overview of some of the filters, features and search parameters that are not to be missed on FreshDrop.net

Domain Filters

This is where FreshDrop really shines. Unique filters narrow down thousands of results based on specific and strict filters like the following…

Language Filters: English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Pinyin, Turkish, Italian

Short Domain Filters: VCVC, CVCV, LLL, LLLL, LLLLL, NNN, etc.

Geography Filters: Geo, Travel, US State, US City, Region, Country

Niche Filters: Adult, Auto, Finance, Health, Internet, Legal, etc.

Domain Search Features

Once you have chosen a desired filter on FreshDrop.net you can further narrow your results to find the perfect names with these search features…

Domain Extensions

Require or Exclude Keywords

Require Statistical Values (See Below)

Domain Length Restrictions

Exclude Undesirable Hyphens or Numbers

Domain Statistics

This is something that virtually all domain marketplaces are missing out on. They simply do not show you the hard data attached to each domain. FreshDrop.net aggregates a ton of valuable data and displays it for each domain. Does a domain receive traffic? Is it indexed on Google?

FreshDrop Pro members enjoy valuable added statistics like WordTracker scores as well as in-depth Google search and advertising data for domain searches that provide awesome insight into the value of names.

Go Give It A Try! Free Pro Subscription Trial

So you’ve read about all these cool features on FreshDrop.net and you’re still here? href="http://www.dotsauce.com/available-domains/">Available Domains Newsletter was sent out last week and contained 49 quality .com domain names. These names were available to register on a first-come first-serve basis.

In what seemed like just hours over 30 domains had been registered out of the 49. As I write this today, 36 of the 49 have been taken by newsletter subscribers. That is a whopping 73% registration rate which actually doesn’t surprise me because this has been occurring with every issue.

I’m pretty proud of that statistic to be honest and it’s why I strive to put an emphasis on quality keywords, brands and development potential over quantity.

Here is an image of the 36 domains that have been taken from Issue #24:
<p

I see some nice brandables weren’t taken if any subscribers want to go back and re-scan the list!

If you would like to subscribe for free and start receiving these available domains by email, please visit the <a
