VIP accounts are being offered exclusive access to a master list of Premium Listing domains and will soon be able to setup keyword alerts to monitor domain listings of interest.

If you’re not familiar with Premium Listings, it is essentially a domain aftermarket setup within GoDaddy’s storefront. Any domain managed with them can be priced and featured within the registration path of those searching for similar domains. I’ve previously written about some of the success I’ve had and how to setup Premium Listings on GoDaddy.

Here is the message I received from my account manager with the interesting parts highlighted:

Many of my clients are actively using our Premium Domain channel as a way of acquiring high value domains for a very small investment. In several situations, paying more money for the one right name is better than pay registration fees for 10 mediocre names.

I have access to our master inventory of domains currently available through our Premium Domains offering. I want to help you build the value of your portfolio by making sure you’re buying the right domains, not just a lot of domains. Let’s run some searches from our list to show you that there are many domains you might be interested in acquiring. What specific keywords or niches are you actively looking in when buying domains?

We have been hard at work developing a tool that will allow us to sort through the massive inventory of premium domain assets and being alerted when new names are added based on your keywords. This was very much a manual process up till now. Please send me your top 5-10 keywords as soon as possible.

Just a simple reply from your email with the keywords will help me to set this up.

This is great news for both buyers and sellers. It looks as if VIP account holders will soon be able to target current Premium Listing domains of interest by keyword and monitor new listings as they come in.

VIP account holders are a great audience to market the new service to. I’m sure this will bolster sales as domain buyers sign up for keyword alerts and discover good deals.

Presently, domain investors are associating the Premium Listings aftermarket with selling because there is no easy way to browse or discover good deals.

If the new service offering does well, I’m sure GoDaddy will consider making a Premium Listings keyword search and alerts tool available to the public.

Would you be interested in signing up for Premium Listings alerts? Will this encourage you to list your domains? Please leave a comment below with your thoughts.
stumbled upon a security exploit after registering a domain that had recently expired.

Reyes found that those who have Google Apps setup on their domains are particularly vulnerable to a social engineering exploit. However, any personal or business domain that is allowed to expire may be vulnerable to identity theft. This warning is not necessarily restricted to those using Google Apps.

Being the owner of a domain obviously enables a person to create and use any email addresses, even those that may have been used in the past. With website histories and domain Whois registrant email addresses being archived, there is due cause for concern.

Additionally, expired domains may become a target for identity theft as news leaks out.

<span

Reyes has provided us with a first-hand demonstration.

"This Domain Has Already Been Registered With Google Apps"

After verifying ownership of his new domain, Reyes was able to gain access to an existing Google Apps for domains account including stored emails, contacts and calendars. This leads to being able to access more sensitive information such as passwords to social networking accounts, shopping and online banking.

Personal Information Compromised

The Google Security team responded to news of the exploit with a statement that it is important to renew a domain or export your personal information. Google may be updating the domain verification process as a result of the incident.

Two Solutions to Avoiding Identity Theft by Domain

The risk associated with expired domains is so obvious that it is often overlooked. A little common sense goes a long way in protecting yourself.

1. Export and Erase All Personal Information

Before allowing any domain name to expire, erase any email accounts and personal information.

Inform all of your contacts that you will be using a new domain and provide them plenty of notice and follow up reminders to update your contact information and email address.

None of your accounts on other websites should be using email addresses associated with the domain.

2. Renew Your Domain Name Indefinitely

Domains can be registered for a maximum of 10 years. Doing so will put your mind at ease and is also said to give some website authority for SEO purposes.

All domain registrars have the option to register for multiple years or to automatically renew a domain. Be sure to have valid payment information on file. You’ll also want to be sure you are receiving email notices from the registrar. You don’t won’t those renewal reminders getting lost in a spam folder.

It’s also a good practice to use an administrator and registrant email address that is not associated with the domain name. Otherwise, you may be vulnerable to domain theft if your website or email address are hacked.

Take special care of your personal and business domains to keep your identity secure! If you are selling or re-branding, take the proper steps before transferring ownership and seek out a reputable buyer.

Please pass the word along about the security risk associated with letting domains expire.
Gary Taylor.

The .co.uk domain name aftermarket is extremely active. In Q4 2010, .co.uk had a higher average sales price than both the .net and .org extensions, quadrupling in value from just $523 in Q1 of 2010 to $2,030 by the end of the year.

The extension is maintaining strength in 2011, currently holding three of the top ten ccTLD positions on the year to date domain sales charts on DNJournal.

If you are new to the UK domain name market here’s a little bit of background about the .co.uk extension and how you can get in on the action.

Nominet UK is the .uk domain name registry in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Dr Willie Black and five others in 1996. There are around 9 million registered .co.uk domain names to date. Nominet publishes a comprehensive annual domain industry report which was featured on DotSauce last year. You can view the 2010 Nominet Annual Report here. (PDF)

How To Invest In .co.uk

There are a number of ways you can get into the .co.uk market and successfully make money. Which way you do it depends on your preferences as an investor. Here are some routes your can explore and some resources to help you along the way.

Hand Registration

The simplest form of domain name investing is registering a domain name from a UK registrar such as DomainMonster.com or 123-Reg.co.uk. Here are some key indicators to help you choose a quality name, which you are likely to be able to resell for a decent amount or develop into something which earns you revenue.

Check Google’s Keyword Estimator on Local UK Exact setting to determine how many searches there are for that term each month. Anything over 4,400 and you are on to a winner. Another good indicator is CPC value. Make sure you will be earning more than £1 per click at a bear minimum; any thing less than that and you’ll be left with diddlysquat by the time Google takes their cut.

DomainPrices.co.uk is one of the longest running databases of .co.uk domain names sales and is good for market research. Pay no attention to the likes of Estibot or any other appraisal tools, they are highly inaccurate more often than not. There are still some great .coms which can be hand registered and with six times the amount of .coms in the world than .co.uk domains, there is plenty of opportunity to go at in the UK market.

Aftermarket

There are some UK specific auction sites where sales tend to be much faster for selling and achieving better prices than major marketplaces like Sedo.

AcornDomains.co.uk is the de facto UK domain name forum and a huge resource of information for new and experienced domain name investors.

DomainLore.co.uk is a simple but effective auction site to buy and sell domains quickly and easily. There are many opportunities on these sites too for finding undervalued domain names that portfolio owners are looking to get rid of to fund other purchases.

I would recommend registering on both websites. Bargains can be found and a savvy investor can make a good profit buying at the right price and flipping the domains. A recent example of this would be the sale of TVS.co.uk which the previous owner bought for $1,500 in 2007 and sold last year for $75,000.

Drop Catching

Drop catching is the art of querying the Nominet Whois database lots of times just as a domain name is about to expire in the hope that you are first to “catch” it as its suspended indicator turns back to available. Drop catching is quite a bit different in the UK compared to the US in the fact that pretty much anyone can register as a member of Nominet for a small annual fee and directly query their database to catch domains whereas ICANN accreditation is significantly more difficult.

Drop catching directly through Nominet requires the domainer to have a script written in pretty much whatever programming language you are comfortable with, which can not just query the Nominet database, but input selected domains to scan during a 24 period and then if one becomes available, send a request to register the domain name.

If you are not confident going through the whole process of becoming a member of Nominet, having a script written and monitoring it yourself, then you can simply back order .co.uk domain through many of the UK registrars for a small fee and save yourself the hassle. Just this weekend I caught Cartagena.co.uk, a Spanish and Columbian holiday resort which I intend to sell straight away.

Domain Development

Be a category killer i.e. WeddingPlanner.co.uk

The .co.uk is also a great market for domain development. Finding your own niche is crucial for this and a savvy investor will have a selection of category killer domain names that they are developing either for long term revenue or for a quick sale once traffic and rankings in the search engines have been achieved. When I say “category killer” I mean market-leading domain names, ones that are generic and can “own” a niche.

I have been collecting dog breed domain names over the last 6 months and own a good selection which I am currently developing to drive traffic to a larger dog insurance website once I have finished building it. One of the sites, Rottweilers.co.uk, now gets over 5,000 visitors per month and the way it is built can now easily be rolled out across the other dog breed domain names I have.

Once you have control of your niche in the UK the returns can by rewarding. A significant example of this was MoneySupermarket.com’s purchase of nine UK financial services domains for an initial £4.6m.

I cannot stress enough that having a strategy for your domain name purchases is important. If your business strategy to develop .co.uk domain names, rather than trade them on the aftermarket, then a great tip is to check out places where you can buy existing websites on a good domain name. There are many UK businesses which are going out of business due to the financial climate and a good domain investor can take advantage of this and snap up an aged domain with good authority and existing content for a relatively small investment.

There is no denying that .co.uk is a great domain extension to invest in. Whichever method you choose to become involved with there is certainly still a large amount of opportunity within the UK domain name market.

DotSauce Magazine

I was pleasantly surprised this afternoon to receive notice that a domain had sold through GoDaddy’s Premium Listings service. After logging in to check out the sale, I noticed something new; Recommended Pricing.

I’m not sure how long this feature has been live. I don’t recall seeing it before and the earliest I can find someone talking about it is just last month. A few months ago, I listed the majority of my portfolio and am now continuing to do so as new domains are acquired.

Today’s sale brought in several hundred dollars profit for a name that was available yesterday for just $19 to DotSauce Domain Club members. The domain (LinkCoupons) sold for $600. GoDaddy takes a 30% commission, so I am expecting a check for $420.

Recommended Pricing and Range

GoDaddy is using a keyword algorithm to generate an automated appraisal for domains as their recommended pricing. Oddly, this data is only shown after domains are submitted. I own mostly two-word keyword domains and found that the appraisals were moderate to low estimates, but interesting to review nonetheless.

A handful of keyword .CO domains had the highest recommended pricing, but I opted to price them significantly lower.

A price range is also displayed for each domain that goes from 50% off the recommended pricing to around 25% more. I think increasing the recommended price by 200% or possibly much more for quality domains is more appropriate pricing.

How It Works

GoDaddy Premium Listings work by advertising your domain to those searching for it or a very similar domain on GoDaddy.com. Instead of seeing “Sorry, this domain is unavailable.” a searcher will see “This name is available as a premium domain.”

As I previously mentioned, GoDaddy takes a hefty 30% commission on Premium Listings, so sellers should price accordingly for at least the minimum you are willing to accept plus 30%. Domains that have sold are conveniently transferred automatically to the new owners’ account and the price is not negotiable.

How To Add Premium Listings

Premium Listings have become a popular outlet for domainers in recent years. So, unless you have jumped ship for more elephant-friendly registrar, I highly recommend taking advantage of GoDaddy Premium Listings (especially after today) as a rewarding and passive means of domain sales marketing.

The process is simple to complete from your Domain Manager by following these steps.

Select a domain or multiple domains

Hover over the “Cash In” icon

Select “Add to Premium Listing“

Set your asking price and select auto-renew listing

Note: I’ve noticed an issue when adding domains in bulk; the text-area is not pre-populated with selected domains so you will need to create a list of names and prices manually.

To view and modify your listings, hover over the green “Buy/Sell” tab in your Domain Manager and select “Premium Listings.”

Have you featured domains as GoDaddy Premium Listings?

Share your success stories and any suggestions you might have for fellow domainers using this service. They have been tracking Super Bowl chatter since 2008 and have discovered that teams generating the most buzz online historically walk away the victors.

For this year’s game, the Packers are ahead by just a bit. Below that information, GoDaddy directs users to their own Whois tool for additional registrant information with a URL address.

Restricting registrant information is an unnecessary step for users searching for complete information on a domain. The tactic may also be unfair to DomainTools.com, other Whois services and competing domain registrars.

I attempted to look up registrant information for domains registered at GoDaddy on numerous other services and registrars. Some provided complete Whois information, but it may be that they do not have updated data. Many others are now showing the restricted information and URL to GoDaddy Whois.

To make a comparison, Register.com Whois does not seem to be affected yet, while DomainTools, Moniker, <a

(Shown above)

I believe registrant information should be made available to the public as defined in ICANN guidelines. Restricting public information is not the way to do it and expecting users to copy and paste a URL address is too far fetched.

What do you think of this move by GoDaddy? href="http://www.cointernet.co/media/press-releases/go-daddy-announces-1st-its-storied-super-bowl-history">announcement from CoInternet is that GoDaddy.com will feature a 30 second commercial segment during the Super Bowl game that is dedicated exclusively to introducing .Co domains.

<object

CoInternet hopes to gain the same momentum by being featured in the big game. The opportunity looks very promising.

Aside from GoDaddy, many other leading registrars have partnered with CoInternet and are promoting .Co more enthusiastically than .Com domains.

Sponsorship deals have been arranged for virtually all leading domain industry publications (including DotSauce Magazine) as well as other major web and print publications such as Website Magazine. Twitter is also on board, using T.co URL shortener as the default.

Make Your Prediction

I have been watching coverage and commentary on .Co domains since the beginning. Feelings seem to be evenly devided between accepting .Co as a success and disregarding it as fools gold.

This poll aims to put the debate to the test. I’m interested to know if you think the general public will use and recognize the .Co domain extension in 2011.

Please take a moment to cast your vote…

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Thank you for voting. You may also be interested in viewing the results of our latest poll. href="http://www.dotsauce.com">DotSauce Magazine

This will be the first in a series of simple how-to guides on domain names. DotSauce receives a lot of visitors each month who are looking for basic domain name information that is not covered in much detail.

I want to make sure aspiring domainers walk away with a clear understanding of domain ownership transfers and other common tasks associated with domaining.

Changing ownership of your domain name on GoDaddy is pretty simple. With hundreds of sales completed under their management, I have the process down to a science and almost never encounter any confusion from new owners.

Step 1. Get account details from the new owner

You will need two pieces of information from the new domain owner to begin a change of ownership.

Account username or ID#

Email address associated with the account

Communicate with the buyer to provide these details. If they do not have an account with GoDaddy you can instruct them to create one for free. No purchase is required to create an account.

Step 2. Access your domain manager

From GoDaddy.com you can access you domain manager by clicking the “My Account” tab (top right) and then click the “Domain Manager” link which will open in a new window.

Step 3. Select the domain you would like to transfer

Click the check-box next to the domain which is ready to change ownership. The buttons at the top of your manager will become highlighted. You can then click the “Account Change” icon.

Step 4. Enter new account information

Type in the customer number and email address provided in Step 1.

You will typically want to select the option to “Use details from specified customer account” so that their name will be associated with the domain and not yours. Sometimes this option will not work if the new owner has not setup their account information.

Congratulations, you’ve just transfered a domain to it’s new owner. You may also be interested in reading my guide on How To Sell Domain Names.

Accepting a Domain Ownership Transfer

The process is also quite simple for those accepting a domain transfer.

Within the GoDaddy Domain Manger you will notice green navigation tabs at the top of the page. Move your mouse over the “Domains” tab and select the “Pending Account Changes” link.

From this page you will be able to quickly accept any domains that are pending ownership transfer.

Transfering Ownership to a Different Registrar

The new owner may request to transfer a domain to a different registrar. They will typically have to pay a transfer fee and initiate the process themselves.

There are two things to remember when transferring to a different registrar.

The domain will need to be unlocked

The new owner will need the unique authorization code (also called an EPP or security key)

Both of these options can be found by clicking on the domain in question from your Domain Manager and reviewing it’s information page. You can see these features highlighted in the image below.

Check your email regularly for a notice from the new registrar. You will need to click a link within that email to approve the domain ownership transfer.

Any questions?

Domain transfers can sometimes be a tricky business, especially when a registrar doesn’t want to cooperate. Fortunately, GoDaddy has one of the best systems for ownership changes.

The A new global TLD, .Free is being proposed by Czech-startup company dotFree Group. The company sells software used to set up a domain registrar while offering free .cz.cc domain names themselves.

At the company’s existing free domain website, nic.cz.cc we can find information on what the .Free catch might be. This information is not mentioned or implied on the new DotFree website. With the goal of discovering just how they were making a profit, I explored the website and came across some interesting details.

What’s the catch?

I found that they are offering a premium domain registration option. This turned out to be a list of generic characters and dictionary words that were marked up anywhere from $4.95 to $14.95 per year. This is not a common practice. Most TLD launches typically reserve only the most premium keywords to be auctioned to the highest bidder during a landrush period.

The dotFree Group plans to host the premium auctions in addition to reserving most, if not all dictionary domains for “premium registrations”.

To be expected with any free domain, registrants are subject to various up-sell services including WHOIS privacy, SSL certificates and something called “Domain Lock.” I’m assuming domain lock is to prevent unauthorized transfers, but that seems like something that is typically default on most registrars.

State of .Free

DomainIncite reports 15,000 unofficial .Free pre-registrations have been claimed in the past two days by 2,787 people.

I am skeptical because Not all TLDs are created equal. A major portion of TLD launch success rides on how it is managed. Taking that out of mind, I would say that .Free has a lot of potential due to a wildly popular concept behind the name.

I believe .Free could do as well as .Me, .Co or even .Info if the concept is adopted by businesses. href="http://darkpatterns.org">DarkPatterns.org has been created to introduce the public to web design issues including, but not limited to:

Shopping cart tricks

Privacy swindling

Friend spamming

Disguised advertisements

Even the Facebook like button gets called out.

The developer and curator of the site, Harry Brignull is a highly experienced User Experience Consultant (and Evangelist). He has started the collection off by explaining some of the most common black hat practices being employed by many well known businesses online.

Domain name registrar 123-Reg, based out of the UK, was put in the spotlight for the all too common trend of sneaking items into shopping carts.

Coincidentally, 123-Reg was just featured here on DotSauce as one of the Top 100 Domain Websites. The #1 site, GoDaddy is probably the most notorious for similar tactics. Many other registrars are just as guilty.

How many times have you seen alternate domain name extensions selected that you did not specifically search for? A user should not have to un-select additional domains simply to purchase what was intended.

Some registrars preselect 2-year registration periods. This practice doubles the necessary cost of a registration. First time domain buyers are being taken advantage of as they may be unaware that paying only 1 year’s fee is even an option.

What other shady tactics are registrars employing?

Will this trend continue? I can imagine many have already jumped-ship for down-to-Earth registrars like Name.com that don’t play these games.

Have a look at DarkPatterns.org to learn about all of the unethical, annoying and often infuriating practices your business and your wallet should avoid at all cost.
<a

Their service offers registrars direct access to the .CO registry.

25 years after the creation of .COM domains, the .CO domain extension is being opened up to the world as a fresh opportunity in a crowded space. The anticipation is building like no other TLD launch before.

This new service from MY.CO allows ICANN accredited registrars such as EuroDNS to offer landrush registrations for .CO domains until July 16th and public registrations during the launch. It all happens behind the scenes, through a robust EPP gateway.

Additional features include:

WHOIS resource showing a registrar as the entity of record

Customer data kept private within a registrar

High performance EPP protocols, Tier 4 datacenter

Supported and authorized by official .CO registry (CoInternet)

Dedicated resources will be allocated during the landrush for each registrar partner, ensuring a smooth experience during peek volume. I imagine MY.CO partners’ and their customers’ pre-registrations will be successful during the landrush period with this advantage.

The .CO domain extension is proving to be very popular even before it’s launch and there is expected to be an explosion of registrations in the coming years.

Interested DotSauce Magazine

Many are upset with VeriSign, the organization which manages the .COM and .NET domain space. Annual 7% fee increases for domain registrations have been in effect for awhile now. On July 1st, the registry fee will again increase, jumping from $6.86 to $7.34. It’s from this base price that ICANN accredited registrars then set their registration markup.

I have always had no problem with fee increases. I feel strongly that it somehow increases the bottom-line value of each domain name. Domainers could simply pass on that value by marking up domain sales prices.

I had to put this “gut feeling” that registration price increases may actually be a good thing for the industry to the test. So, I set about browsing a few microeconomics articles on WikiPedia about supply and demand. I wanted to see how the price increase may affect demand for domains.

Price increases generally do have an adverse affect on demand. However, there are a few products and services that do not apply to the normal rules of supply and demand. These goods are known to have a positive price elasticity, meaning that as prices increase so does the demand.

Could a domain name be classified as a Veblen good? These are luxury items that are not easily attainable. Certain premium .com domains fit that description very well, some could even be considered priceless.

In 1998, I had no real concern paying $75 per year for .com registrations. It was a necessity for a quality web presence and perceived status of any business or personal site.

Today, domain registration costs are relatively low compared to what one would consider a typical Veblen or luxury good, but they have the special characteristic of being 100% unique.

Could it also be that as more people register domain names the overall desire to claim more domains increases? This is known as the bandwagon effect.

I’m no economics expert, so my ideas on the price-demand correlation may be wrong. I can’t help but feel these fee increases are justified and beneficial to the industry as a whole. What do you think? You’re welcome to leave a comment below with your thoughts on the matter.
<a

Before delving into what is to come in the not-so-distant future, I would like to offer some tech history for those unfamiliar with the creation of the internet. Following that I will be sharing some of my personal experiences and ideas regarding the .COM space.

First, there were local computer networks established within government organizations and universities across the globe. In 1973 the TCP/IP protocol was being developed by Vinton Cerf from Stanford and Bob Kahn from DARPA which would allow diverse networks to connect to each other. Did they ever.

In 1985, the first domain name was registered (Symbolics.com). Years pass and a select few savvy entrepreneurs, businesses and investors including IBM, Intel, AT&T and Cisco stake their claim by applying for .COM domain names.

By 1995 the networks had exploded and become the world wide web, a collective pool of human knowledge. Millions are aware, if not getting involved actively or passively. The internet did what it is now known to do very well, that is, grow!

ICANN was established in 1998 as in independent organization with the task of managing IP addresses and domain names.

Just prior to ICANN’s formation in 1997, a major internet milestone was reached. 1 million .COM domain names had been registered. It took 12 years. This number is now dwarfed in comparison to the over 80 million .COM domains registered today.

Over the past two decades the internet has grown to become an integral part of our individual lives and society as a whole. It may even be getting the recognition it deserves with a nomination for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.

The .COM top level domain has reached it’s 25th anniversary! You can join in the celebration and learn more at 25YearsOf.com

The .COM Bubble (Our 15 Minutes of Fame)

The .COM Bubble was the period from 1995-2000 during which investors poured massive amounts of funding into internet and technology startups. After seeing record rises in stock valuations, business was moving lightning fast and without caution. It turned out to be quite a big mess. I prefer to remember this as the period in which over 20 million .COMs were claimed.

In 1997, I taught myself how to code websites and soon had my very own one-man web hosting and design company up and running. I witnessed the boom in online business and began to create my own web properties, communities and sites for local business by contracting for design work and reselling hosting.

Along the way, I made a few domain sales on eBay and Afternic. Unfortunately, I lacked the capital to invest very much in domains (oddly enough, domain registration was $75 per year back then). A small barrier that would soon be broken down.

If you entered into the domaining industry after 2000, like myself, then you probably have a little nagging feeling that you somehow “missed the boat.” The forethought and technical understanding to apply to register keyword domains was held by a select few. Many of those individuals are now famous today for their successes.

One of those founding domainers is Frank Schilling who holds one of the largest domain portfolios in the world. In an older post on DotSauce I featured some predictions from the pros, from which I’d like to share this quote by Frank:

Today, getting a good domain name may be pricier than it was in the early days of domaining, but dollar for dollar you are still far better off investing in .COM domains because .COM is a global brand.

There is still countless opportunity today, still massively profitable investments to be made in .COM domains. You simply need to break down the barrier of entry into this business.

The .COM Barrier

There are a few things that prevent your average internet enthusiast from becoming a successful domainer. Let’s review them and help break down the .COM barrier.

1) Price - High quality .COM domain names sell for $1 million+ seemingly every month. Countless small and medium sized sales in the hundreds to several thousand dollar range are made every day across many domain marketplaces.

Most would agree that it is easier to make more profit by investing in high quality domains at a price tag of a few hundred dollars each which can later be sold for several thousands rather than do lots of smaller sales. While this may be true, raising the initial capital is a barrier that many face.

You can, however, get started now with those smaller sales. New .COM domain registrations are around $7 if you use a coupon code and there are other bargain deals in the aftermarket to get you started towards building a valuable portfolio.

2) Domain Industry Knowledge – A successful domain investor understands the big picture. They know the life cycle of a domain, it’s expiration process, the registrars and organizations involved. They know the best research tools, analytics and data to discover worthwhile domains.

Some domainers have all this down to a science and keep watch for the latest news and notable sales.

It would be difficult to get far without a solid understanding of the domain aftermarket and domain names themselves. Having a passion for what you do goes a long way.

3) Common Sense – Unfortunately, this is a big part of the barrier to overcome for success in domaining. Without common sense, your experience domaining may not be such a pleasant one and could turn into a money-sink. One needs to apply common sense when undertaking these domain business tasks.

When registering or buying a domain be sure the vision for your domain is clear. You want to know that it is worth your investment and ideally have potential end-users present. With new tools, like Estibot, it is becoming easier to evaluate a domains potential, but further research and a human’s perspective is always recommended.

When choosing how to monetize a domain through development or parking. Without significant time invested in development and content creation, most mini-sites or landing pages will not be indexed high enough on search engines to be worth the time invested. As for PPC parking, if your domain does not receive enough traffic to recoup the yearly renewal fee then don’t bother with it. Many domains are not fit for either, and that’s OK. Instead, focus on sales or your established websites.

When marketing domains for sale, pricing your inventory and negotiating sales you need to have a good understanding of the liquid and potential value of your domain. What a name may sell for years from now is not a realistic interpretation of present value. Understanding who you are marketing to is also a very important factor in determining a successful sales price.

Be reasonable, be real and learn from your mistakes to overcome these and the other barriers to .COM success.

The Future

In part 2 of this article series I will be exploring some of the latest innovations, research, data and predictions of how the internet will evolve and grow over the coming years.

I’m very excited about writing this feature as I’m somewhat of a futurist, early adopter and science-fiction fan. Or maybe it’s because I don’t want to miss the boat again. How about you?

Please subscribe by There are evident risks for trademark infringement when using .CM domains.

I encourage any decent sized company to take the initiative and pre-order their respective .CM domain to prevent any later headache. I also strongly discourage anyone from attempting to profit from typo traffic on established .COM websites.

The typo traffic is likely not as much as you think on your average .CM name. There are more profitable ways to quickly develop online business on legitimate domain names.

I’m also not convinced that .CM is a viable brand option for anything but a company in Cameroon.

Traffic Machines?

On the other side of the table, there are countless .CM domains are generic in nature and can not be said to violate any trademarks. Could these be valuable resources for driving some targeted traffic to existing business?

Rick Latona is managing <a

After you subscribe and begin receiving newsletters, immediately create a label and filter for each one. See Newsletter Suggestions below.
<p

Choose display features like skipping the inbox (handy for those daily newsletters) or placing a star icon. Then of course you create your label name. See Label Suggestions below.

Registrant Alerts notifies you whenever a change is detected on any of your domain records.

This is normally a paid service, but here’s a little pro tip…

Sign up for a free account at DomainTools and then navigate to the Registrant Alert page, they offer a free registrant alert for one of your own email addresses!

If you use the same email address as the contact for each of your domain registrations, like most others, then the one free alert is all you really need.

Here are some screenshots of what the alerts look like…

(

After you confirm your email address with Registrant Alerts, you will begin receiving these email notices any time you register new domain names, when your domain names expire or domains transfer ownership.

It’s basically a WHOIS watchdog service. The information is simple, but good to know in a timely manner.

Enjoy and feel free to suggest any other essential tools you use as a domainer in the comments below!
Telnic, the originator and registry operator for .tel, has also introduced a free iPhone application, available from the iPhone app store, which it claims “means that, for the first time ever, anyone can edit and publish information on the Web under their own domain without needing web design skills or software or even a PC.”

<img

Now, 20 years later, .MX is once again open for business.

This may present a good opportunity for domainers seeking to test the waters in ccTLD investing, myself included. Continue reading below for other interesting ccTLD happenings.

.ME domains) there is what’s known as a sunrise period and a landrush period. The general public will be able to register .MX domains September 1st.

However, It seems that if you own a .COM.MX domain you may register your exact corresponding .MX domain on March 1st.

.MX Domain Registration Schedule

March 01 to July 31, 2009: owners of domain names in the five sub-extensions (.COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, .GOB.MX) can register their sites with the .MX extension. The new domain names will be registered under exactly the same name as the previous domain names. If there are more than one domain name applicant with the same domain name, the one with proof of having the name for longer will be granted the .MX domain name of the same name.

August 1 to August 31, 2009: during the transition period, the register will analyze the requests received for domain name registration.

September 1 to October 31, 2009: the .MX domain names will be open to everyone (general registration period) on a “first come, first served” basis.

In Other ccTLD News…

<img
