I think the best option is to put up a sales page on the domain that lists all of the good things about the domain, traffic stats, PPC bid costs, automated appraisals, etc and does most of the selling for you. You will have a more qualified buyer because you know they are interested, and you can answer all the common questions on the sales page including what your criteria for considering offers is. That should mean few emails and phone calls that waste time. :-)

If you are not sending a “personal” message, it’s spam and if some nut like me reports you, it could result in your hosting account being closed and/or domain being suspended. In my experience many companies, especially the bigger and/or more technically oriented they are, do not have any decision makers email in the whois. sometimes you do get the owner, but its not the majority in my experience. nice article though. i will have to check out tout. cheers

The domaintools browser bookmarklet is neat. the problem is the best contact address for the company you want to contact is not found in the whois. often there is no registrant email, and only an IT or developer as admin and techinical contacts.
