CircleID contributor Mark Jeftovic recently published a very detailed editorial on his thoughts of the current state of the domain aftermarket. Recalling old predictions and comparing generic sales of years past to more recent sales; Jeftovic has somewhat of a rant that domainers are not really investing, but rather speculating.
I suppose I am guilty of labeling some of my registrations “investments.” I would really rather not call it “domain flipping.” Jeftovic shares this great point that affirms registrations as investments though:
It’s the grain of truth of the domaining world: they really are the single greatest investment on earth, when your cost basis is close to the price of registration.
After reading the article I was thrilled to see Frank Schilling himself had responded with quite the editorial of his own! Defending the value of domains as investments as only one with his unique experience and position as a founding domainer can.
Mr. Schilling touches on the economy, poor PPC revenue and notes the rapid growth of the internet and the nature of domain names as the backbone of the entire system.
As more people buy domain names, more people will figure out that certain names are better in quality than others.
