Well! unless the domain expiring fits indeed the concept you have in mind or for brand/idea protection or simply complement the domain portfolio you may hold.

Regarding "hyphenated", that is not correct, it is only your personal opinion. It may be true for you, as you shape your statement regarding hyphenated domains on a limited information. While for DotSauce.Com it does serve the purpose, certainly it is not true for all.

Our hyphenated domains rank always better than our same non-hyphenated domains, and better then of competitors with similar domains, similar words, hyphenated domains. Since 2002, our hyphenated domains are bringing us true income, enough for life and pleasure.

And if you have hyphenated, you shall have non hyphenated too. But we worked for 8 years with hyphenated and had no problems in ranking whatsoever. For certain major keywords we keep rank one.

Again and again there are "experts" teaching those which had their websites when experts were still in the middle school. Mark Fulton started his now very informative DotSauce.Com in 2006, we started making money from Internet in 1995 in a different business, and in 2002. in business services. Of 20,000 people in our client's database, so far nobody ever has complained that domain looks unprofessional due to hyphen, further we have never "lost" high portion of traffic to to hyphen.

Unfounded.

Good reflection.
What I'd like to share with you, is about traffic. I am experienced in European ccTLDs mainly, not gTLD, but I guess it's the same. So, there are 2 different models of investments which I observe - traffic/revenue domains and powerful keyword domains.
First group of people firstly ask - what is the domain traffic/revenue. Based in this, such person appraise a domain name. I understand such model if your target is parking revenue - then OK. BUT, if you think about investing in strong domain name, with a business opportunity, the only thing we pay attention should be stats of a keyword, not traffic (this is the second group).
Why I think so? - High traffic is easy to generate, it comes and goes off, depending on domain history etc. When you have a domain name with a strong keyword stats, even if a domain name has 400-500 view per month, a domain could have a great business opportunity ahead, it could respresent an interesting business industry and so on.... In such case, these 500 uv per month could worth significantly more, rather than 5000 of poor quality traffic per week. So, my tip is - pay attention to keyword quality and the industry it's about, not to traffic only.

Best regards,
Adam

Helpful article, Mark. Thanks. A couple questions from a newbie to the game:

Re: #4, searching Google keywords...Do I search for ALL the terms in a name TOGETHER (e.g., PurpleComputerWidgets.com, search for "purple computer widgets" or just "purple computer" or "computer widgets" or do I do multiple variations on the search)? And once I do the search(es), what exactly am I looking for the results to be?

Also, when I check the monthly search volume, what are the minimum numbers I should be looking for and why?

BTW, right now I am mostly looking for domains to park, so am I correct to conclude that your advice here pertains to that specifically?

Thanks again for the advice!
Mark

Domains still remain a mystery for me. I see so much profit potential in them but I'm not brave enough to actually dive in, ya know?

Thanks for these tips. I guess sometimes I register a keyword domain even when the keywords are in the wrong order. I should really stop doing that as it confuses visitors

>Staring at endless rows of text and numbers can get to be maddening

You're not kidding... I've been trying to improve my ranking algo to get the good ones to 'bubble' up, so I don't feel so bad about not scanning whole lists. It *is* maddening, but when you discover a good one, you know it was worth it...

Thanks for this post and thanks also for mentioning my tools. I also recommend downloading my daily expiring domain lists (snap, namejet and dropping names already pre-analyzed, pre-appraised and filtered, along with keyword data), just select 'expired domains list' from the navbar.

If you're a member, you can find them here:
estibot.com/members/droplists

Nitpicking here, about the search "purple widgets", I prefer to call it 'phrase match' and reserve 'exact match' to search popularity measurement to avoid confusion.
-Esa
