Straight From Google: Best Practices SEO Guide

Just announced on the official Google Webmaster Central blog, a best practices guide for Search Engine Optimization has been published for those new to SEO or not familiar with all of the best ways to improve your listings on Google search.

I quickly read the 22 page PDF guide and can confirm it does have some great tips and guidelines for improving your websites by optimizing all the things GoogleBot looks at when crawling your site. The guide features lots of illustrations, tips and tutorials, things to avoid, even some information on using social networks.

If you’ve been doing SEO for awhile now you may be aware of all the suggestions Google provides in their SEO guide.  I personally found it refreshing to read the guide over and see that I am doing things right! So, check it out and see what the Google SEO guide can help you with.

Get it: Google’s Search Engine Optimization Guide (PDF)

Google has also mentioned they plan to keep the guide updated as often as possible to keep suggestions and tech advice current.

I’ve just started blogging and found the section on the structure of URL very useful. I’ve been using messy URL structure so I’m going to apply these great tips to my site. Thanks!

Great. Even if some are obvious, and you have been doing it for a short while, it’s all so easy to relax and forget some. So guides like this are really helpful to just have that gentle reminder without getting bogged down in overwhelming technical mumbo jumbo.

    Thanks for the head’s up…

There are some cool tools if you search google for software to see how google looks at a website you’ve designed and how the google bots see your website. Pretty cool stuff.

Thanks for this entry. There are lot of misconceptions, lot of rumors and lot of self made stories about Google’s SEO approach towards sites. Its time Google cleared these “myths” and I think this 22 page Guide would silent some high flyers on many web master blogs and forums. I am downloading the guide now and may post a review of it here after finishing it. :)

Google is a sweetheart for doing this little things eh? ;) Sharing is caring and they do really matter because this little things all do add up. Google is actually trying to better the web and if most webmasters try to follow certain rules and guidelines you get a win-win situation where google is better able to analyze and rank the content and you get more targeted and free traffic.

    Awesome!

    Best,
    Mike

Google can release this pdf but take it with a grain of salt. Just because they say it is a certain way, doesn’t necessarily mean 100% its that way. Need to experiment and test each part to make sure that the results make sense with the suggested methods.

I was (like most, I’m sure) leary of why they would publish this. Maybe Google finally woke up and realized that the legit WH SEO industry is a good thing for their business and not the enemy.

I wouldn’t, however, expect this document to ever get that advanced. There is no doubt that while this info is good, it was delivered to create a sense of ‘giving’ without really ‘giving’.

I started using a google approved SEO company for my site 6 months ago, and without changing anything visible on the site, they move me from page 18 to page 1 for the biggest most generic search term (and anouther 30 odd terms besides). Just be following these rules and staying on top of Googles ever changing algorithm. It is always more complex than a simple article could cover, and I would advise paying experts to get there and stay there BUT if money is tight, this is definitely the best alternative. Far better than risking offence with “black hat” techniques which will bite you on the bum in the end.

I came across this new guide in a forum days ago, downloaded and read it. I gotta say that it’s very much useful and informative especially for the newbies but for those who have done a lot of SEO already, well, they could get additional tips, I guess.

I have begun using this document as a guide to my clients who want to do it for themselves…inevitably, they come back to me for consulting because they need extra help. This is the minimum that you should be doing for SEO on any site - Google WILL reward you for following this guide.

The guide was a refreshing read with no fluff material and had only pure stuff. It wasn’t very advanced stuff but as always fundamentals are fundamentals and they have their own place.
